The Rotary Club of New Brighton met at the Grand Valley Inn, Fallston for our anniversary dinner meeting on March 18, 2010.
At our meeting, we were honored to have District Governor-elect Cindy Sakala and her husband, Paul with us. Past President Nick Campagna and Judy were here to help celebrate.
The program for the evening was President Abraham Lincoln, portrayed by re-enactor, Rick Miller. President Abe was sad to hear that our very own Mary Todd Lincoln (Diane Dornenburg) was unable to attend the meeting. President Lincoln presented insight on his life before, and during his presidential term as well as the legacy that he left for future generations. Our student of the month Tyler and his date Samantha asked Abe many good questions concerning this time period. Rick Miller did a fantastic job in giving us greater insight on the history and culture of this time period. President-elect Bob presented Abe with a Rotary coffee mug and a club banner that portray a long boat on the Beaver River, which Abe was quite familiar with!. Abe spoke of a picture that was believed to be taken of him on the Beaver River on a boat just like the one depicted on the banner. Also, during our picture opportunities with President Lincoln, Abe explained to us why you see many photos during the early 1800’s with no one smiling in them… because of the extended time it took for the photos to develop, which further explained why you don’t smile or talk when your picture was being taken, it would be blurred (why you see many pictures of this era blurred around the mouth area).
